James Carville is pushing Accelerationism.
Apocalyptic hopium isn't just lazy or bizarre, it's curious and we should all be suspicious when it's pushed.
I have said this before, but I think it's worth repeating and highlighting singularly – this is accelerationism. It's apocalyptic hopium.
James Carville is pushing Accelerationism like some kind of weird extremist, and we should just say it like it is.
The New Republic - Alex Shephard / March 3, 2025 Déjà Oof Why the Second Trump Presidency Is So Much Worse for Democrats The first time around, the party had a plausible endgame for Trump’s reign. Today, that’s entirely absent. With minorities in both chambers of Congress, just three liberal justices on the Supreme Court, and a paucity of national leaders, there is little Democrats can do; for Carville, there’s also little they should do. “With no clear leader to voice our opposition and no control in any branch of government,” he wrote, “it’s time for Democrats to embark on the most daring political maneuver in the history of our party: roll over and play dead.” Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Elon Musk will quickly overstep, screw things up, and piss everybody off. Forget about all that #Resistance stuff; in Carville’s view, it’s best for Democrats to just sit back and let it happen—then swoop in and retake power.
Acceleration is absolutely almost always associated with extremist politics — the far right especially, or the far left.
And because nobody agrees on the meanings of words anymore, I'm going to specify that by "far left" I mean actual far left. I DON'T mean progressives (*eyes rolling*), nor people who just want strong banking regulations or Black history taught in schools who Trump calls "radical left" and also "maniacs and lunatics", I don't mean who the right-wing thinks is far left (Joe Biden), and I probably don't mean whoever Hakeem Jeffries was whining and complaining about. I don't even mean socialists who might want to nationalize the hospitals and banks, nor do I even mean communists who want worker owned businesses and stuff like that. I mean actual far left: tankies who maybe stan for North Korea. Or blatant accelerationists who wanted Trump to win the election so that he could "centralize the government" and make it ready for being brought under Putin who they believe will reconstitute the Soviet Union, envelope the world under a unipolar power, bringing world peace forever under some communist utopia. Stuff like that is what I mean when I say "far left".
(I'm sorry if this is the first time you're hearing about the fantasy behind why some on the left are pro-Russia and say the same weird stuff JD Vance parrots and what some call red-brown theory. Some of the deets vary but that’s about the size of it, and frankly saying that’s the equivalent to people who want universal healthcare and a functional postal service is ridiculous.)
My point is…
That so-called "centrist" James Carville is floating apocalyptic hopium should make everyone deeply suspicious. It's not just a matter of scoffing at this political has-been old guy – there's something troubling about him doing PR for accelerationist ideology.
I don’t know what’s going on or where this is originating from to eminate from that guy, but my suspicion is that this PR is linked very much to elite panic.
