We need a data center development moratorium until we can figure out what the hell is going on.
What doesn’t seem to get talked about enough is that these data center plans include on-site power plants. People think they’re just buildings with computers.
We need to hit the brakes on this ai bubble bs.
The Real Race for an AI Moratorium: Stopping Data Centers Jenna Ruddock / Dec 17, 2025 Tech Policy Press Confronted with similar stakes, cities and counties across the US are pulling the emergency brake. From Maryland to Missouri, at least fourteen states are home to towns or counties that have implemented moratoriums: a complete pause on data center development. In early December, over 200 groups – from faith groups in Florida and Louisiana to physicians in Texas – publicly called for a moratorium on new data center construction nationwide. On Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) joined the fight, announcing that he will also push for a national data center moratorium. The Trump administration has spent its first year mobilizing to bulldoze a regulatory fast-track for these projects, building on an effort initiated by the Biden administration in its final days. But even as the White House now tries to prop up failed efforts by Congressional Republicans to pass their own version of an AI moratorium – blocking any state efforts to regulate AI, despite significant resistance from within their own party – it’s never been clearer across the country that people are prepared to fight back against the runaway data center construction fueled by Silicon Valley’s AI hype. “We’ve entered the realm of absurdity.”
And it’s truly absurd, but these data center project plans include surprise gas turbines belching out pollution, and some plans even involve on-site surprise plans for nuclear reactors.
My letter to reps:
We need a total and complete moratorium on data center development until we can find out what the heck is really going on with these projects and if any of them even make sense. There should also be a complete halt on any economic development grants or tax breaks even being considered for anything related to data centers, AI, cryptocurrency.
Please feel free to copy or repurpose for your own letters to reps.
Separate but related letter to reps:
We need a total and complete ban on nondisclosure agreements with any connection to economic development grants, tax breaks, economic or industrial zoning, or the like. And we need a thorough and complete investigation of NDAs signed by elected officials around data centers, AI, or cryptocurrency. And it should be against the law to hide the involvement of the “Magnificent 7” companies (Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Tesla) in any proposed “economic development” projects.

Postcard addressed to Senator Marty Flynn in Scranton Pennsylvania, dated January 2, 2026, Dear Marty Flynn, What did you know about the planned nuclear reactor at the data center project in Lackawanna County and how long did you know about it? What else are politicians hiding with NDAs? We need an immediate moratorium on data center projects. They all need to be halted until we can find out what the hell is going on with these plans!
