Why do Republicans hate young men?
There's an astoundingly embarrassing Republican advertisement I'm seeing here in Pennsylvania over and over.
I think the commercial is trying, and failing, to convince people that Rob Bresnahan was not horrendous in voting for huge cuts to Medicaid, which will lead to more rural hospitals closing faster, and the very voters who voted for him to be harmed the most. The commercial shows 2 fairly fancy looking women with milky smooth skin and dressed nicely attired on a park bench and they start discussing basically how obviously young men shouldn’t be allowed to have healthcare if they’re not currently employed. How does this sound right to people promoting MAGA? Have the ad people lost their minds?
You might think that the commercial is trying to be racist, and win white people over with the innuendo of cutting young Black men off Medicaid, but they don’t actually articulate it, and I actually don’t think that was the primary message. White people make up 39.6% of Medicaid recipients, and we all know it. And a previous commercial to this one, possibly by the same organization, painted young men as “ripping off the system” and showed what looked like a white guy sitting on a sofa with a game controller in one hand and with the other eating some kind of snack food.
And we all know that wealthy women with attitudes like the women depicted in that ad are just the sort of women who will bail out their own ne’er-do-well sons from all manner of misconduct they engage in, repeatedly. If it’s their sons eating cheesy poofs and playing video games in the basement billiard room or the guest house, that’s ok. It’s just those white boys on working class couches that are unworthy, we know that’s what they think. These are the rich women who will pay large sums to get their sons out of even serious legal trouble, no matter what. These are the kind of affluent people who will make sure their sons never see any ramifications even when they screw up badly, never mind even if they can’t hold a job without daddy’s business connections. They will finagle it so their sons never miss any type of medical care they ever need, and never have to worry about anything.
Their young men will be pampered beyond belief, our young men will be denied even basic human needs.
These types of affluent ladies want other people’s sons, brothers, husbands, and young fathers, to pay the price for not being born into their rich suburban elite enclaves with their prim and pretty clothes worn in prim and pretty parks. They want ordinary young men to die of preventable disease, be barred from healthcare that would enable them to get the treatment they need in order to work, or be saddled with immense debt for their entire youth because of one medical emergency. Because they’re selfish jerks who just don’t care about other people they see as beneath them.
Of course they believe they deserve healthcare and they don’t think this will really affect them. They just don’t think they need the rest of us for anything. They will scratch their heads when they realize that their loved ones will also die if there’s not a hospital within a reasonable distance, if they have no personal helicopter like Rob Bresnahan, and all the life flight services are overburdened because so many have been decommissioned for lack of Medicaid funds.
It’s astounding that they think that ordinary people being targeted with this advertising would not see this as grossly grotesque and having unfair wealth of fancy people rubbed in our faces here in one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation.
I hear Dem supporters constantly hand-wringing about how Democrats need to “reach” young men more, and that young men have turned to voting Republican, and the Dems need to win them back or something. And here Republicans are saying straight out young men who get ill, maybe lose their job because of a health crisis, or may be unable to get employment because of disabilities, should not have healthcare. Because that’s what they mean when they say men who aren’t trying hard enough to work, they mean people who have barriers of some kind – usually health related!! Many people with serious health conditions, and even terminally ill people, have at times been dismissed as simply lazy or malingering, often before diagnosis, but even sometimes after diagnosis. These are the people who need Medicaid and the healthcare more.
And who cares anyway about the reason someone is uninsured? In other nations, people just have healthcare coverage because you know, it’s humane and needed and you can’t predict the moment someone has an appendicitis, or is injured in a natural disaster, or whatever the case.
This idea that you should keep healthcare from young men is bonkers, and the fact that Republicans feel good about running these ads with affluent looking women running young men down ruthlessly with disregard and derision is proof that Republicans aren’t interested in winning over young men at all. The Republicans certainly don’t seem to think they need to speak to those young male voters like they’re worthy of anything, not even health insurance coverage.
Republicans obviously just hate young men. Isn’t it obvious?
My letter to reps (including 2 who voted for the steep medicaid cuts):
I keep seeing this commercial with 2 fancy women sitting at a park talking about how other young men don’t deserve healthcare. It’s really something else that we’re being told that young men shouldn’t get cancer screenings or be covered in the case of emergencies just so these rich ladies can sit there and squawk about how other people’s sons don’t deserve healthcare and how they’re cool with healthcare being taken away from other people’s sons, brothers, and husbands. Because we know darn well that rich women like that will move heaven and earth for their own sons, no matter what they do or what they deserve; they wouldn’t dream of having their own rich sons go without healthcare. So it’s really strange that some politician or political organization is spending so much money on commercials to rub it in for the rest of us that rich ladies are clapping for rich people in Congress to cut off ordinary young men from healthcare coverage. Why do politicians hate young men so much?
